Let’s talk CSA

Everyone says it every year, but we can hardly believe that 2023 is already coming to an end. The end of the year always brings about an air of reflection, and one of the things we are thinking back on is our 2023 CSA. Throughout the year we offered a wide variety of produce including various peppers, squashes, fruits, eggs, potatoes, onions, corn, canned goods, and much more. We even included recipes of some things you can make with what you received that week. Check out our Instagram feed to see some pictures of what this past year produced. Isn’t fresh produce just absolutely beautiful?

We’re already looking forward to opening up sign-ups for the 2024 season, but maybe we first need to go over what a CSA is. CSA stands for “Community Shared Agriculture” and is sometimes called “cropsharing.” Think of it as a subscription to a weekly box of fresh, local produce, dependent on seasonal crops and the yields produced. Or think of it as purchasing “shares” in the farm/s, and the weekly boxes you receive are your dividends of the profits.

Your subscription supports local farmers, growers, and producers, and you in turn receive fresh, organic, and local produce. You’ll get to try a wide variety of crops, and it’s a great way to try new things and learn to cook with them. The produce will always be ultra-fresh and organic, packed with flavors and vitamins!

CSAs are also a way to connect more with your local community and the farmers who offer/contribute towards the CSA. Not only does your purchase of a share support their livelihood, but you will also gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the crops’ dependence on good weather. No matter how much effort we put into our crops, nothing will produce without rain and sunshine. And in West Texas, we have to be ready for drought, hail, and excessive heat, all of which can impact the crops and their yields. Which in turn will affect what is or isn’t available for any given week. So purchasing a share also means you have a stake in the risks.

We’re not trying to scare you off but rather just highlight the communal aspect of a CSA and how it involves the whole community. Through hard work and your support, we will do everything we can to ensure a bountiful harvest from our crops. Through trial and error, experience, and feedback from previous members of our CSAs, we’re excited to implement what we’ve learned and make 2024 our best year yet!

In 2024 we are offering a box every week for 31 weeks, with the first box scheduled to be available in early April. The subscription will be available in our online shop, with a cost of $805.69 for all 31 weeks. However, there will also be add-ons available for an additional fee, such as eggs and hopefully a few others. The boxes will be available for pick-up on Tuesdays and Fridays (you’d choose either one of those days to pick up your box) at Health 2 U in Seminole during their normal business hours. And if you can’t make it, we will add the option of delivery—$7 within Seminole and the price outside of city limits would vary based on location. There will also be (depending on crop yields of course!) a limited number of boxes to purchase on pick-up day for those who didn’t purchase the full CSA subscription.
